Shinjuku NS Building, Skyscraper in Nishi-Shinjuku, Japan
Shinjuku NS Building is a 134-meter-tall skyscraper with 30 floors above ground and 3 basement levels in Nishi-Shinjuku. A large glass-roofed atrium runs through the interior and brings daylight throughout the space, while shops and restaurants occupy multiple levels.
Construction started in 1979 under architect Shōji Hayashi's direction and finished in September 1982. The project was a joint development by Nihon Seimei and Sumitomo, built during a period of major economic expansion.
The building represents Japanese corporate architecture from the early 1980s economic boom period. It reflects the design values and aspirations that major companies wanted to express during that era of growth.
The building sits just three minutes from Tochomae Station and seven minutes from JR Shinjuku Station, making it easy to reach. Inside, visitors find restaurants and cafes spread across multiple levels along with shops, giving plenty of places to rest while exploring.
A 29-meter-tall Seiko pendulum hangs in the central atrium and swings every 30 seconds. This mechanical sculpture has become a distinctive feature over the decades, drawing the eye of visitors who pass through.
