Etajima, Island city in Hiroshima Bay, Japan
Etajima is a city on an island of the same name in Hiroshima Prefecture, sitting across the waters of Hiroshima Bay. The island shows a Y-shaped coastline with hills in the interior and small settlements along the shores.
The Naval Academy was relocated here in the late 19th century and shaped the development of the island for decades. After World War II, the institution was restructured and now trains officers for the Japan Self-Defense Forces.
The island takes its name from its historical coastlines and the bays that shape its form. Fishermen supply local markets with oysters and other seafood from the protected waters.
A bridge connects the island to the main island of Honshu and makes it easier to reach by car. Ferries run regularly from several ports in the region and offer an alternative for travelers without their own vehicle.
Two running events each year attract participants from across the region who are rewarded with local specialties after crossing the finish line. The autumn marathon ends with fresh oranges, while the winter event offers oysters as refreshment.
