Kasuga-taisha

The Kasuga shrine complex features four main sanctuaries connected by covered walkways, with red-painted buildings contrasting against white walls.

Founded in 768 under Empress Shotoku's instructions, the shrine served as the primary religious center for the influential Fujiwara family during the Nara period.

The shrine honors four principal deities through separate buildings, each maintaining traditional Kasuga architectural elements with sloping cypress roofs.

Visitors can reach the shrine through a 30-minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station or take direct buses to the Kasuga Taisha Honden stop.

More than 3,000 stone and bronze lanterns, donated by worshippers through centuries, line the pathways and buildings of the shrine complex.
