Kashima extends along the Pacific Ocean coastline and Lake Kitaura, encompassing 106 square kilometers with a population density of 634 persons per square kilometer.
The establishment of Kashima as a modern municipality occurred on April 1, 1889, followed by its elevation to city status in 1995 after merging with Ono village.
The Kashima Shrine stands as one of eastern Japan's oldest Shinto sanctuaries and serves as the foundation for numerous Japanese swordsmanship techniques.
The Kashima Industrial Zone contains 1,500 factories specializing in petrochemical and steel production, while maintaining connections to agriculture and commercial fishing sectors.
