Ube, Industrial port city in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan
Description
Ube is a harbor settlement along the shore of the Seto Inland Sea in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Several river systems run through the area and link different parts of the municipality together.
History
The settlement gained municipal status in 1921 and developed rapidly as a coal industry center. During the Second World War, the town experienced heavy air raids that killed more than 250 people.
Culture
The name comes from local geographic terms that remain visible throughout the urban layout today. Public spaces show the connection between industry and nature through green areas along the waterfront.
Practical
The coastal location makes orientation along the sea straightforward, while river courses provide additional landmarks throughout the area. A visit works best outside the hottest summer months when the climate is more comfortable.
