周防大橋, Cable-stayed bridge in Yamaguchi, Japan
Suo Ohashi (周防大島) is a cable-stayed bridge in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, crossing the mouth of a river delta along the northern shore of Hiroshima Bay. A single central steel tower carries the main span, with a dedicated pedestrian path running alongside the road.
The bridge opened in the early 1990s and created the first direct road connection between two areas that had only been reachable by longer detours. Its completion changed travel patterns in the surrounding communities for good.
The bridge connects the mainland with the coastal areas around the bay, and locals use it regularly to reach beaches and waterfront parks. On weekends, it sees steady traffic from families heading toward the shoreline.
Both pedestrians and drivers can cross the bridge, with access points on each side of the delta that are easy to find. It is worth checking in advance whether any maintenance work is planned, as it can occasionally affect the pedestrian path.
The bridge serves as the main gateway to Suo-Oshima island, sometimes nicknamed the Hawaii of Yamaguchi because of its mild winters and citrus groves. The island even has a small park dedicated to the historical ties between the local community and Hawaii.
