Edo Castle, Ancient castle in Chiyoda, Japan
The stone walls, moats, and gates of Edo Castle form a defensive complex that extends across 5.5 kilometers from east to west in central Tokyo.
The castle started as a fortress in 1457 by Ota Dokan, later became the headquarters of Tokugawa shogunate from 1603 to 1868 during Japan's feudal period.
The castle grounds include the Imperial Palace East Gardens, where seasonal celebrations and traditional ceremonies continue throughout the year.
Visitors can access the East Gardens through multiple subway stations, with guided tours available in multiple languages from Monday through Friday.
The original castle structure included 20 towers and 40 gates, with a central keep reaching 60 meters in height, making it the largest fortress in Japan.
