Chiyoda Kaikan, Imperial Crown style building in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, Japan
Chiyoda Kaikan is a concrete building with a tiled roof in Chiyoda-ku, demonstrating architectural elements from the late Taisho to early Showa era. The structure houses offices, restaurants, clinics, and shops within its renovated spaces.
The building was constructed in 1934 as Gunjin-Kaikan for military purposes and later served as headquarters for Allied Forces after World War II. Over time, it underwent transformations to serve different functions.
The building contains a preserved gold thread jacquard wall covering with hunting scenes, discovered during restoration work after decades hidden beneath paint layers. This discovery reveals the skilled craftsmanship that went into the original design.
The building is located one minute on foot from Kudanshita Station and is easily accessible. It operates daily from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM and provides various practical facilities for visitors.
A silver line on the floor marks the boundary between the original structure and new additions, helping visitors identify the preserved sections of this cultural property. This simple design element helps make the different building phases understandable.
