Kami-Atsunai Station, Staff halt station on the Nemuro Main Line in Urahoro Town, Japan
Kami-Atsunai Station was a small railway stop on the Nemuro Main Line in eastern Hokkaido, in the Urahoro area. It had two side platforms and sat in a sparsely populated, rural part of the island.
The station opened on December 1, 1910, and served the local area for over a century. It passed to JR Hokkaido management in 1987 and closed in 2017.
The name Kami-Atsunai comes from an Ainu word referring to the local river, a common naming pattern across Hokkaido that reflects the island's indigenous heritage. Travelers passing through this part of eastern Hokkaido can still notice how many place names carry this same Ainu origin.
The former station site sits in a remote rural area and is most easily reached by car. Since it no longer operates as a stop, there are no facilities or staff on site.
After closing, the station building was converted into a signal box and kept in use by the railway. This means the site did not simply fall empty, as happens with many other closed stops along this line.
