Horonobe, Town in Soya Subprefecture, Japan

Horonobe stretches across 574 square kilometers of northern Hokkaido, containing 28 wind turbines along a 3.1-kilometer coastal section.

The region received its name from Ainu language terms, where 'poro' means large and 'nup' means grassland, referring to expansive uncultivated territories.

The town maintains a population of 2,415 residents who live among reindeer herds and participate in renewable energy initiatives.

Travelers can reach Horonobe via JR Hokkaido trains connecting to Wakkanai, Nayoro, Asahikawa, and Sapporo, with Wakkanai Airport located 53 kilometers away.

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency operates an underground research laboratory in Horonobe to study sedimentary rock formations for nuclear waste storage solutions.
