Wakkanai Fukkō Ichiba

Wakkanai Fukkō Ichiba is a modern commercial building located at the waterfront with fishmongers, local product stalls, and restaurants all in one place. Fresh seafood and regional specialties are sold daily by local fishers and producers throughout the facility.

The facility opened in 2007 and created a central marketplace for commerce in Japan's northernmost city. This development helped revitalize and modernize the Wakkanai port district.

Local vendors at Wakkanai Fukkō Ichiba maintain traditional fishing practices, displaying and preparing seafood according to northern Japanese customs.

The facility is easily reached by bus from Wakkanai Station and is open from morning until early evening every day. The best time to shop is in the morning when selection is widest and crowds are smallest.

The location sits near Cape Soya and offers access to fish from waters where currents from the Sea of Japan meet the Sea of Okhotsk. This geographic position makes the local catch distinctive in its composition and quality.
