Miyada

Miyada, village in Kamiina district, Nagano prefecture, Japan

Miyada is a small village in Kamiina district nestled among the mountains of Nagano Prefecture. It features traditional houses, narrow streets, and small shops selling handmade goods, with rice paddies and cedar forests surrounding the settlement along the Tenryu River.

The village dates back over a thousand years, mentioned in ancient records during the Heian period as a stopping point for travelers. It served an important function on an old trade route and has maintained its traditional character through the centuries.

The village's name reflects its roots as a resting place along an ancient travel route. Visitors can observe how locals still practice farming and handcrafts, and how community gatherings remain central to village life.

The village is accessible via National Route 153 and connected to larger cities by the Iida Line train. Visitors should know that winters are very cold with heavy snow, while summers are short and mild with frequent rain in September.

The village hosts two special festivals worth visiting: the Gion Festival in July featuring music and dance, and a wine festival in May where visitors can taste local wines. These events show how the community blends traditional celebrations with contemporary activities.
