Sado Province, Historical province on Sado Island, Japan
Located off the coast of Niigata Prefecture, Sado Province encompassed the entire Sado Island with three administrative districts: Sawata, Hamochi, and Kamo.
The province became part of the Tokugawa shogunate's direct holdings in 1601 following the discovery of substantial gold deposits that required extensive mining operations.
The province served as a destination for exiled political figures and religious leaders, including Emperor Juntoku and Buddhist monk Nichiren in the 13th century.
The province maintained its administrative status until 1871, when it was incorporated into Niigata Prefecture as part of the Meiji period reforms.
The silver and gold mines of Sado Province generated substantial revenue for the Tokugawa administration through forced labor practices during the Edo period.
