Nanki-Shirahama Airport, Commercial airport in Shirahama, Japan.
Nanki-Shirahama is a commercial aviation facility located in the southern part of Wakayama Prefecture on Honshu island. The runway extends across hilly terrain roughly a kilometer and a half southeast of Shirahama town.
The facility began operations in April 1968 with an initial runway measuring 1200 meters. Over the years the runway was lengthened to handle larger planes and meet growing passenger traffic.
The terminal name refers to the old Nanki region and connects travelers with the southern Kii Peninsula identity. Visitors typically use the facility to reach nearby hot spring resorts and temple trails that preserve centuries-old spiritual practices.
Japan Airlines runs three daily round trips to Tokyo using Boeing 737-800 planes. Travelers should arrive somewhat early due to the compact terminal size, especially during busy travel periods.
This facility holds the position of the southernmost airport on Honshu and the only commercial aviation center in Wakayama Prefecture. Its location provides direct access to the Pacific coast and shortens travel time to remote coastal areas considerably.
