Hamamatsu Castle, Japanese castle in Naka-ku, Hamamatsu, Japan
The stone walls of Hamamatsu Castle rise from the Mikatagahara plateau, featuring multiple baileys and traditional unshaped stone construction techniques at its foundation.
Tokugawa Ieyasu claimed the castle in December 1568 and transformed the former Hikuma Castle into his military headquarters until relocating to Sunpu Castle in 1586.
The castle earned the title 'Castle of Promotion' as numerous daimyo stationed there advanced to significant positions within the Tokugawa shogunate administration.
The reconstructed three-story castle tower houses a museum displaying Tokugawa clan artifacts and provides observation points overlooking the Pacific Ocean and surrounding park.
The castle grounds maintain original stone foundations with distinctive 'nozura-zumi' construction, where natural rocks were positioned without additional shaping or modification.
