Kanmon Bridge

The Kanmon Bridge stretches 1068 meters across the Kanmon Strait, connecting the islands of Honshu and Kyushu with a steel structure rising 140 meters above water.

The construction of Kanmon Bridge began in 1964 and reached completion in 1973, establishing the first direct road connection between the islands of Honshu and Kyushu.

The bridge functions as a meeting point between two distinct regional identities, linking the cultural centers of Shimonoseki in Yamaguchi Prefecture and Moji-ku in Fukuoka Prefecture.

Vehicles crossing between Honshu and Kyushu pay a toll fee to use the bridge, which integrates with the Kyushu Expressway network for efficient regional transportation.

The structure accommodates approximately 700 ships passing beneath it daily through the Kanmon Strait, requiring specific engineering solutions to maintain maritime navigation.
