National Bunraku Theatre, Puppetry theater in Nipponbashi, Japan
The National Bunraku Theatre is a theater in Nipponbashi dedicated to Japanese puppet performances. Each production combines spoken narrative, shamisen music, and wooden dolls operated by three puppeteers working together for each character.
The building opened in 1984 to preserve traditional Japanese puppet arts with roots dating to the early 1600s. This establishment marked a turning point in protecting and supporting the continuation of this ancient form of expression.
This venue is the center for Bunraku, a traditional puppet art form that remains alive and active in Japan today. Visitors witness how performers and puppeteers keep this craft vibrant through regular shows and community engagement.
The theater is located one minute from Nippombashi Station by foot. Tickets can be reserved online, by phone, or purchased at the box office upon arrival.
The main performance hall seats 753 people and is specifically designed for Bunraku productions. A smaller hall with 159 seats presents different types of entertainment and recorded performances.
