Nanto, Mountain city in Toyama Prefecture, Japan

Nanto is a city in southwestern Toyama Prefecture, surrounded by forested mountain ranges and rice paddies. The districts spread across a wide area with several historic neighborhoods and rural valleys.

The city formed in 2004 by merging several communities such as Fukuno and Johana from Higashitonami District. This consolidation brought together settlements with different economic focuses under one administration.

The Inami area hosts woodcarving studios where artisans shape decorative elements for temples and homes. Visitors often glimpse craftspeople at work through open workshop doors.

Buses connect the different districts and run to regional train stations in the surrounding area. Travelers should check timetables, as frequency varies between neighborhoods.

The Fukumi Tanabata Festival takes place each July and fills streets with colored paper streamers and lanterns. During the celebration, locals wear traditional garments and pull decorated floats through the lanes.
