Yaotsu, Mountain town in Kamo District, Japan
Yaotsu is a town in Kamo District situated between the Hida River and Kiso River in a forested region. The landscape consists largely of woodlands with clear waterways that shape the natural environment.
The town was officially established in 1889 and expanded through a series of mergers with neighboring villages during the 1950s. These consolidations shaped the present-day municipality and its current boundaries.
The Hill of Humanity Park commemorates diplomat Chiune Sugihara, who issued visas to Jewish refugees escaping persecution during World War II. Monuments and displays in the park tell the story of his courage and remain a place of reflection for visitors today.
When visiting, most museums and memorials are open during daytime hours, though some close on Mondays and holidays. Weekdays are the best time to explore and visit local attractions without time constraints.
The former Yaotsu Power Plant from 1911 stands on the Kiso River and was the first facility of its kind in the region. Today it operates as a museum showcasing early hydroelectric history in Japan.
