Shimamoto, Transport hub in Mishima District, Japan
Located between Tennozan and Otokoyama mountains, Shimamoto spans 16.78 square kilometers at the confluence of Katsura, Uji, and Kizu rivers.
The town gained administrative status in 1889 through the merger of several villages within Shimakami district before becoming Shimamoto-cho in 1940.
The Minase Shrine, designated as a Jingu in 1939, stands as a significant religious structure with a water well drawing visitors throughout Osaka Prefecture.
Two railway stations, Shimamoto and Minase, connect the town to major urban centers while the Sanyo Expressway provides direct road access.
The Suntory Yamazaki Distillery, established in 1923 as Japan's first whiskey production facility, operates guided tours with English audio assistance.
