Yōkoku-ji, Buddhist temple in Nagaokakyō, Japan

Yōkoku-ji is a Buddhist temple in Nagaokakyo where buildings are arranged across sloping terrain and connected by long corridors. The layout links the main hall with the inner sanctuary through garden spaces that serve as transitions between the different sections.

The temple was founded in 806 by Buddhist priest Enchin, marking its establishment during an important period of temple building. Its second head priest was reportedly the renowned monk Kūkai, giving the temple early connections to influential Buddhist figures.

The temple serves as a place where visitors can participate in monthly ceremonies honoring the Eleven-Faced Thousand-Armed Kannon statue. This deity remains central to the spiritual life here and shapes the rhythm of practice for those who gather regularly.

The temple is best visited during dry weather to comfortably navigate the pathways connecting the different areas. A visit near the 17th of any month allows you to attend a ceremony, though you can arrive earlier to explore the buildings and gardens.

The temple grounds feature more than 5,000 hydrangea plants along a dedicated path that blooms in a profusion of colors during June. This seasonal display transforms the temple grounds and draws visitors who appreciate the blend of spiritual space and natural beauty.
