Nagaokakyo, Metropolitan city in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan
Nagaokakyo is a city in Kyoto Prefecture that stretches between Kyoto and Osaka across an area of 19.17 square kilometers (7.4 square miles). Residential neighborhoods occupy about sixty percent of the territory, while the western part features forested mountains.
The city takes its name from Nagaoka-kyō, the imperial capital that existed between 784 and 794 under Emperor Kanmu. After this brief period, the government relocated to Kyoto, yet the historical name remained attached to this area.
The Garasha Festival takes place each November and brings together residents who attend performances, view traditional crafts, and sample regional foods. The event spreads across several locations and presents local customs in an accessible way.
The Hankyu Railway line runs through the central area, while the JR Kyoto Line serves the eastern part. The Oyamazaki Junction provides access to major expressways within a few minutes.
The western mountains within city limits produce high-quality bamboo shoots that feature in local cooking. This farming tradition has contributed to the regional economy for generations and shapes local agriculture today.
