Otokuni-dera, Buddhist temple in Nagaokakyō, Japan.
The temple grounds contain 2,000 peony plants that bloom between late April and early May, creating a botanical display across the temple gardens.
The temple was established around 600 CE under Empress Suiko's decree, making it the oldest religious structure in the Otokuni region.
In 811, Buddhist master Kūkai engaged in intellectual discussions about esoteric Buddhism with Saichō, marking a significant religious exchange.
The temple opens daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with an entrance fee of 500 yen for adults during peony season and free admission at other times.
The temple preserves a mandarin orange tree connected to Kūkai's offering to Emperor Saga in the ninth century.
