Otokuni-dera

Otokuni-dera is a Buddhist temple in Nagaokakyo featuring spacious grounds with multiple buildings, a central pond, and traditional stone lanterns distributed throughout the site. The main hall and auxiliary structures showcase wooden architecture that reflects different historical periods of construction and renovation.

The temple was founded during Empress Suiko's reign, making it one of the oldest religious institutions in the Otokuni region. Over centuries, the temple underwent multiple expansions and reconstructions that introduced architectural features from different periods.

This temple serves as a place where visitors observe monks conducting daily prayers and rituals that have been part of its routine for centuries. The gardens and main hall attract pilgrims and locals who participate in seasonal ceremonies throughout the year.

The temple is easily reached on foot from the nearby train station and welcomes visitors throughout the year. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon when crowds are smaller and the grounds feel more serene.

A mandarin orange tree on the grounds has historical roots linked to a gift presented to an emperor centuries ago. This tree stands as a rare example of a plant maintained within a temple for over a thousand years.
