Sotogahama, Coastal town in Higashitsugaru District, Japan

Sotogahama is a town in Higashitsugaru District in Aomori Prefecture, stretching across two separate areas of the northern Tsugaru Peninsula. It borders Mutsu Bay on one side and the Tsugaru Strait on the other, creating a setting shaped by sea and land.

This town came together in March 2005 when Kanita town merged with the villages of Tairadate and Minmaya. The consolidation unified three separate communities into one administrative area.

Fishing defines daily life here, as residents harvest sea urchin, sea cucumber, scallops, and squid from the surrounding waters. This tradition shapes what you see in the harbors and local markets, where the catch of the day drives the community.

The Tsugaru Line railway connects the area to other parts of the region, while National Routes 280 and 339 provide road access to larger cities. Visitors arriving by car or train will find good connections to main destinations across Aomori Prefecture.

The Odai Yamamoto I site here holds archaeological findings from the Japanese Paleolithic period, revealing that people lived in this area thousands of years ago. These discoveries make it an important location for understanding early settlement in the region.
