Tobetsu

Tobetsu is a town in the Ishikari district and spreads across low mountains and plains near the Ishikari River. The landscape combines gentle hills with open agricultural areas that form a quiet rural setting.

The settlement began in 1902 and developed as a rural community. Post-war administrative reforms in 1947 reshaped the town during Japan's reconstruction period.

The name comes from the Ainu language meaning 'river from marsh', connecting the place to the indigenous heritage of Hokkaido's first people.

A university and high school serve as key institutions in the region. The rural setting means you should plan ahead and allow flexibility for getting around the area.

The town mascot Tobenosuke depicts a Eurasian tree sparrow dressed in a kimono made from baby's breath flowers, symbolizing local crops. This unusual character shows how the community celebrates its agricultural identity.
