Abu, Rural town in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan
Abu is a coastal town in Yamaguchi Prefecture that brings together three distinct landscapes: the Nago seaside area, the Udago region, and the Fukuga mountain section. The town spans approximately 116 square kilometers within the Kita-Nagato Kaigan Quasi-National Park.
The area developed as part of Nagato Province and took its present form in 1955 when three villages merged: Nago, Fukaga, and Utago. This union shaped the structure of the community today.
The local community maintains Japanese traditions through seasonal celebrations featuring regional costumes, music performances, and traditional dance presentations throughout the year.
This location is accessible via the JR West San'in Main Line railway and National Routes 191 and 315, offering good connections to neighboring regions. Visitors should expect less frequent train service than in larger urban areas.
In 2022, the town gained national attention when a municipal worker accidentally transferred the entire COVID-19 relief budget to a single resident. This unexpected event brought widespread recognition to the small community.
