Takachiho

Takachiho is a mountain town in Miyazaki Prefecture known for its dramatic gorge with volcanic cliffs and a waterfall that drops into emerald pools. The landscape is shaped by eruptions from nearby Mount Aso and offers hikers and nature lovers striking viewpoints.

The town fell under Nobeoka Domain rule during the Tokugawa period, when arsenic ore mining drove economic growth in the region. Mining operations ceased in the 1960s, shifting the local economy away from resource extraction.

The Takachiho Shrine hosts evening performances where dancers and musicians tell stories of Japanese deities, bringing visitors directly into the local spiritual world.

Travelers reach Takachiho by train to Nobeoka Station, then transfer to a bus, or rent a car for exploring the area. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable hiking conditions with clear views and mild temperatures.

The Kunimigaoka platform offers a rare view of a natural phenomenon where clouds gather below the observer, forming a white sea effect. This sight occurs under specific weather conditions and is often overlooked by visitors.
