Okuizumo

Okuizumo is a mountain town in northeastern Shimane Prefecture where forested hills and deep valleys define the landscape. The town spreads across many districts nestled among the peaks, with rivers and streams flowing through steep terrain.

The town formed in 2005 when two local municipalities merged into one administrative unit. However, the region had already been known for steel production for hundreds of years before this consolidation.

The Okuizumo Sword and Tatara Museum displays traditional sword-making methods that have shaped local identity for centuries. Visitors can observe craftspeople working with locally produced steel in authentic techniques still used today.

Visit during warmer months when mountain passes are easier to navigate and roads are in better condition. Plan ahead for transportation, as the town sits deep in the mountains with limited bus routes, making a rental car more practical.

A scenic train route winds through the mountains, offering views of waterfalls and unusual rock formations that would take much longer to reach on foot. This journey gives travelers a different perspective on how the landscape connects the scattered settlements below.
