Hamaoka Nuclear Power Plant, Nuclear power plant in Omaezaki, Japan
Hamaoka Nuclear Power Plant is a large energy facility on Japan's east coast in Shizuoka Prefecture, located roughly 200 kilometers southwest of Tokyo. It contains five reactor units arranged across a coastal site designed to generate electricity on a significant scale.
The first reactor unit started generating electricity in 1971, with additional units becoming operational over the following years. Following the Fukushima incident in 2011, the entire facility was shut down and has remained offline since then.
Local communities regularly participate in surveys regarding the plant's operations, with recent polls indicating shifting attitudes toward nuclear power among different generations.
The facility is not open to public visits as it remains a secured military and industrial site. Visitors can view the plant from a distance at nearby coastal areas or designated viewpoints in the surrounding region.
The plant sits directly above a major fault zone in one of Japan's highest-risk areas for earthquakes and tsunamis. This geographic reality has made it a focal point for safety discussions and public concern throughout its existence.
