Tokyo-wan Kannon

Tokyo-wan Kannon, Colossal Buddhist statue in Futtsu, Japan.

Tokyo-wan Kannon is a colossal statue rising 56 meters above Tokyo Bay with an observation deck built inside its structure. The concrete figure contains 324 internal steps leading to the viewing platform overlooking the bay.

The structure was built in 1961 under Masae Usami's direction as a monument for peace following World War II. Its construction reflected Japan's desire to express hope and healing after the war years.

The statue depicts Kannon, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy, and holds spiritual significance in Japanese religious practice. Walking inside the figure, visitors experience the reverence people hold for this compassionate deity.

The site requires personal transportation to reach as it is located away from the city center. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since climbing the internal stairs is physically demanding.

The interior holds artwork created by local artists that offers rare glimpses into Japanese craftsmanship traditions. These artistic elements remain hidden from the outside and often surprise visitors as they explore within.
