Fukue Airport, airport
Fukue Airport is a small facility on the largest island of the Goto group, located near Onidake mountain. It has a single asphalt runway about 2000 meters (6500 feet) long designed for regional aircraft, connecting passengers and cargo to larger cities including Fukuoka and Nagasaki.
The airport opened in October 1963 and has been serving the region since then. In 2014, it was renamed Goto Tsubaki Airport, adding a local name that references the camellia flower cultivated throughout the area.
The airport displays its name in both Japanese and English, with the newer name Goto Tsubaki Airport referencing the camellia flower that thrives locally. The camellia holds cultural significance on Fukue Island, where centuries-old trees are celebrated and protected.
The terminal is small and easy to navigate with ticket counters and basic waiting areas clearly marked in Japanese and English. The airport sits close to the main town, making it straightforward to arrange transportation by bus or rental car upon arrival or before departure.
The airport experiences strong winds that can make landings tricky, requiring experienced pilots to navigate the approach safely. Ancient camellia trees more than 300 years old grow nearby and are protected as national treasures, adding a unique character to this modest facility.
