Genbikei

Genbikei is a valley carved along the Iwai River featuring steep rock walls, waterfalls, and fast-flowing sections. The river's continuous flow has shaped the stone formations into distinct patterns over time.

The valley became known to travelers during the early modern period as a destination worth visiting. A turning point came in 1877 when an important political figure traveled through the region and stopped here.

The ravine has long drawn artists and writers seeking inspiration from its forms and flowing water. Today visitors walk through to experience the natural surroundings and feel the river's presence.

A path runs through the valley allowing visitors to view locations from above or walk near the water level. Good footwear is important since the paths can be wet and slippery, especially after rain.

The valley formed through erosion of volcanic rock originating from nearby Mount Kurikoma. This geological composition gives the stone a distinctive coloring and structure found nowhere else in the region.
