Kitanosho Castle, Japanese castle ruins in Fukui, Japan.

The foundations and stone walls of Kitanosho Castle stand within a public park, marking the location of this former military structure from 1575.

Shibata Katsuie constructed Kitanosho Castle in 1575, featuring a nine-story keep that ranked as the largest defensive tower in Japan at that time.

The castle grounds include memorial statues of Shibata Katsuie, his wife Oichi, and their three daughters who influenced Japanese political relationships.

The castle ruins, located at 1-21-17 Chuo, allow free entry and connect directly to Fukui Station through a network of pedestrian paths.

Following defeat at the Battle of Shizugatake in 1583, Shibata Katsuie set fire to the castle after his wife chose to die alongside him.
