Chikubu Island, Sacred island in Lake Biwa, Japan
A granite rock island rising from Lake Biwa features steep cliffs, natural caves, and a solitary beach named Benten-hama on its northwest shore.
The island's religious significance began in the Nara period when Monk Gyoki installed Four Heavenly Kings statues, leading to centuries of spiritual practices.
The island contains Hogon-ji Temple and Tsukubusuma Shrine, with the temple being the 30th station of the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage circuit.
Ferries depart from three ports - Nagahama, Imazu, and Hikone - with the journey from Nagahama Port taking approximately 30 minutes to reach the island.
The island's Karamon Gate, designated as a National Treasure, originates from Osaka Castle and represents the only remaining structure from Hideyoshi's fortress.
