Eihei-ji, Buddhist temple in Fukui Prefecture, Japan
The temple complex consists of more than 70 wooden structures connected by covered walkways on a cedar-forested mountainside in eastern Fukui Prefecture.
Monk Eihei Dogen established this temple in 1244 after returning from China, introducing Soto Zen Buddhism teachings to Japan through this mountain sanctuary.
The temple maintains traditional Zen practices where resident monks follow strict daily schedules starting before dawn with meditation, chanting sutras, and performing duties.
Visitors reach the temple by taking a direct bus service from Fukui Station, which operates every hour and completes the journey in 30 minutes.
The temple buildings extend across 330,000 square meters of forest land, featuring meditation halls, ceremonial spaces, and monks' quarters arranged in precise order.
