Journey to the Center of the Earth, Amusement ride in Mysterious Island, Tokyo DisneySea, Japan
Journey to the Center of the Earth is a ride in Mysterious Island at Tokyo DisneySea that sends its vehicles through caverns filled with glowing crystals, giant mushrooms, and underground laboratories beneath Mount Prometheus. The route passes through several chambers with moving figures and effects before ending in a rapid ascent through an open shaft.
The ride opened in 2001 together with the entire park and used technology originally developed for Test Track at Epcot. Engineers adapted the system to fit the volcanic setting and the Jules Verne narrative, creating a new kind of themed ride.
The name comes directly from Jules Verne's 1864 novel about explorers attempting to reach Earth's core through an extinct volcano. Visitors see instruments and notebooks everywhere that refer to the fictional Professor Lidenbrock's scientific expeditions.
Guests should arrive in the early morning when wait times are shorter, or use the Disney Premier Access option if available. The vehicles move very quickly and jerkily at times, so it is not suitable for small children or people with back or neck problems.
The final encounter shows a moving creature in a volcano chamber whose size and movements often surprise visitors expecting a calmer ride. Immediately after, an explosive escape section follows in which the vehicles shoot upward in seconds and reach daylight.
