Karakol

Karakol stands at 1690 meters elevation near Lake Issyk-Kul, surrounded by the Tian Shan mountains with snow-covered peaks rising in the distance.

The settlement began as a Russian military outpost in 1869, later becoming a base for explorers mapping Central Asian territories during the 19th century.

The city features both a Russian Orthodox Cathedral constructed in 1895 and a Dungan Mosque built in 1910, reflecting its multicultural population.

Every Sunday, the city hosts one of Kyrgyzstan's largest animal markets where locals trade livestock against the mountain backdrop.

The Bugu-Ene Zoo, established in 1987, remains the only zoological park in Kyrgyzstan, maintaining native and exotic animal species.
