Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctuary

The sanctuary spans 4,068 square kilometers across northern Cambodia, containing lowland forests and the largest swamp in the country along the Thai border.

Created through royal decree in 1993, this natural reserve aimed to protect the critically endangered Kouprey, a wild cattle species native to Southeast Asia.

The sanctuary forms part of the Northern Plains, where local communities maintain traditional practices such as resin-tapping, fishing, and sustainable agriculture.

Visitors need to arrange guided tours through certified operators, as the remote location requires specialized transportation and local expertise for wildlife observation.

The sanctuary houses Cambodia's national bird, the giant ibis, alongside 150 different bird species within its diverse ecosystem of dipterocarp forests and wetlands.
