Phnom Sorsia

Phnom Sorsia is a limestone cave system near Kampot featuring multiple chambers decorated with stalactites and stalagmites, including a large central hall. A Buddhist temple complex stands within this main chamber, illuminated by electric lights to showcase the natural formations and religious installations.

The cave began as a natural geological formation but transformed into a religious site when Buddhists built a temple within the main chamber. This integration reflects how communities in Kampot Province have connected spiritual practice with the local landscape.

The main chamber displays a distinctive stalagmite shaped like an elephant head, which inspired locals to call it Rung Damrey Sor or White Elephant Cave. Visitors can spot this rock formation and understand why it holds special meaning for the community.

The cave sits roughly 18 kilometers east of Kampot and is accessed via National Highway 33, followed by an unpaved road to the entrance. Wear sturdy shoes since the cave floor is uneven and some sections may be damp or slippery.

Thousands of bats inhabit the eastern sections of the cave, flying in and out through narrow passages and creating remarkable displays during their daily movements. Visitors who time their visit right can witness this natural wildlife activity firsthand.
