Kirirom National Park, National park in Kampong Speu Province, Cambodia.
Kirirom National Park is a protected area in Kampong Speu Province, Cambodia, covering the eastern slopes of the Cardamom Mountains. Pine forests grow on these slopes between 600 and 750 meters elevation, creating a mountain landscape with a climate of its own.
King Monivong gave the area its name in the 1930s when he built a retreat here. The site became a national park in 1993, one of the first protected areas in Cambodia.
The name Kirirom means mountain of joy and refers to the cool air and relief visitors find at this elevation. Families come here on weekends to picnic under the pines and visit the waterfalls.
The park lies 112 kilometers from Phnom Penh along National Road 4 and can be reached by car or bus. Overnight options range from simple guesthouses to camping sites set among the trees.
The elevation keeps temperatures lower than in the surrounding plains, attracting plant and animal species that are otherwise rare in Cambodia. Walkers find streams and cliffs that stand out clearly during the dry season.
