Mount Kumgang Tourist Region

Mount Kumgang spans 530 square kilometers of mountain terrain with granite peaks reaching heights of 1,638 meters and containing numerous waterfalls and lakes.

The region transformed into an international tourism destination in 1998 when North Korea opened its doors to South Korean visitors through organized cruise ship tours.

The mountain changes names with seasons: Kumgangsan in spring, Pongraesan in summer, Phungaksan in autumn, and Kaegolsan during winter months.

Tourism operations ceased in 2008 following a security incident, and the region currently maintains restricted access under North Korean government regulations.

The Hotel Haegumgang, formerly positioned at Australia's Great Barrier Reef, was relocated to serve as a floating accommodation in the Mount Kumgang region.
