Olympic Gymnastics Arena, Indoor sports arena in Songpa District, South Korea
Olympic Gymnastics Arena is an indoor venue in Bangi-dong within Songpa District with seating for over 14,000 people. The roof features a cable dome held in place by steel cables and four layers of fabric that span the interior without additional supports.
The building opened on April 30, 1986, and two years later hosted the gymnastics competitions during the 1988 Summer Olympics. Between 2016 and 2018 it underwent major renovations that updated its facade and technical systems.
The building evolved from an Olympic sports facility into a place where international performers take the stage and where people from across Seoul come for concerts and events. Today many visitors know it more for its live shows than for its athletic past.
The building sits in eastern Seoul within Songpa District near other sports facilities and is well connected by subway. Visitors attending an event should allow time to navigate the size of the space and find their seats.
Architect Kim Swoo-geun designed the first cable dome in the world that uses only steel cables and fabric layers to form the roof. The construction avoids columns or interior supports and creates an open floor plan with no obstructions to sight lines.
