Stupa of State Preceptor Jigwang from Beopcheonsa Temple Site, Wonju, National Treasure stone stupa in Wonju, South Korea.
This stone stupa in Wonju is a rectangular monument standing eight meters tall with a multi-tiered construction. The surface displays carved Buddhist symbols and narratives arranged symmetrically across its levels.
The structure was built during the Goryeo Dynasty and was moved to Osaka in 1912. It suffered damage during the Korean War before being returned to its homeland.
The monument reflects the craftsmanship of the Goryeo period through its carefully carved decorative elements and balanced proportions. Visitors can observe the detailed work at each level of the structure.
The monument underwent thorough restoration between 2016 and 2021, using stones from the original Wonju quarry. Visitors should expect uneven surfaces and the site can be visited during any season.
During restoration, old mortar was carefully removed and documented to reveal the original structure beneath. The roof and finial were rebuilt using new stone, while protecting the historical original materials.
