Daejeon, Metropolitan city in central region, South Korea
Daejeon sits in a basin-shaped valley between mountain ranges and spreads across five administrative districts in the center of the country. The city follows the course of the Geum River, which flows through the area and is surrounded by forested hills.
The settlement grew rapidly after 1905 when a railway junction was built here linking the capitals in the north and south. In the 1970s, the government began developing the area as a hub for research and technology.
The name translates literally as great field, recalling the agricultural origins before its transformation into a modern city. Residents favor the parks along the river where families gather on weekends for picnics and walks.
High-speed trains run regularly from the main station to other major cities and provide fast connections throughout the country. Most public facilities, museums, and parks are easy to reach by metro or local buses.
Nearby are natural hot springs that have been used for centuries and are now incorporated into several public baths. The science district houses over one thousand research institutes, including facilities for robotics and artificial intelligence.
