Aksu

Aksu is an industrial city located on the left bank of the Irtysh River in southern Pavlodar Region. It developed due to nearby coal deposits and mineral resources that remain central to its economy today.

The settlement began in 1899 as Glinka village near coal deposits, was renamed Yermak in 1913, and became Aksu in 1993. These name changes reflect the shifting political and economic circumstances of the region.

The population includes Kazakhs, Russians, Ukrainians, Belarusians, Germans, Tatars, and other ethnic groups, each maintaining their traditions.

The city has numerous schools, lyceums, and other educational facilities that serve the community. Major employers like the Aksu power plant and ferroalloy factory provide work for many residents.

The Irtysh-Karaganda Canal originates in Aksu and supplies drinking water to multiple regions across the country through an extensive distribution network. This infrastructure project plays a key role in water supply for the drier parts of Kazakhstan.
