Kurchatov

The city stands on the left bank of the Irtysh River between Semey and Pavlodar, with scientific facilities spread across the surrounding territory.

Established in 1947 under the name Semipalatinsk-16, the settlement served as the central hub for Soviet nuclear weapons testing until the program ended in 1991.

The National Nuclear Center of Kazakhstan maintains laboratories and research facilities where scientists continue studies in nuclear physics and energy development.

The city connects to major regional centers through a railway network, with regular trains linking to Semey, located 130 kilometers east of Kurchatov.
