Museum of Archaeology

The Museum of Archaeology sits within the Gylym Ordasy complex and displays finds from different periods of human history in Kazakhstan. The collection includes tools, weapons, jewelry, and household items that show how cultures changed and developed over thousands of years.

The museum was founded in 1973, but its roots trace back to research that Kazakh scientists started in the 1920s. Those early excavations and studies formed the foundation for the collection you see today.

The objects on display reveal how people lived and worked across this region, from simple tools to decorative jewelry and pottery that shows daily life over many centuries. Walking through the galleries, you see how communities adapted and developed their crafts through different eras.

The museum is accessible on foot from the old city center and is located alongside other cultural institutions in the Gylym Ordasy complex. Guided tours are available in multiple languages to help you understand the objects and their importance.

One of the most striking exhibits is a reconstructed burial chamber from the Altai Mountains that shows how ancient peoples honored their dead. This recreation gives you direct insight into funeral practices that would be difficult to understand otherwise.
