Third Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge, Road bridge in Nakhon Phanom, Thailand.
The Third Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge is a 1,423 meter road crossing that spans the Mekong River and connects Thailand with Laos. The structure uses prestressed concrete construction and links Nakhon Phanom province on the Thai side with Thakhèk on the Lao side.
The bridge opened in 2011 as a result of cooperation between Thailand and Laos to improve cross-border connections. It became part of the Asian Highway Network, which links the region to wider trade routes.
The crossing connects daily life between both sides, with traders, workers, and families regularly moving between the two countries. You notice a steady flow of commerce and personal travel that shows how intertwined the communities have become.
You can cross on foot or by vehicle, with checkpoints at both ends where officials check documents. Bring your passport and be aware that hours may vary depending on which country you are entering.
The structure was built as a gift from both governments to symbolize their friendship and regional cooperation. Few travelers realize that the "Friendship Bridge" name carries official diplomatic weight rather than being merely poetic.
