Wat Phra That Phanom, Buddhist temple in That Phanom District, Thailand.
Wat Phra That Phanom is a Buddhist temple in That Phanom District near the Mekong River in northeastern Thailand. The white tower with gold decoration rises above the surrounding halls and courtyards, flanked by several lower shrines and pavilions.
Five rulers from the Mon kingdom initiated construction shortly after the death of Buddha to house sacred relics. After collapsing in 1975, the central tower was completely rebuilt in its original form.
The grounds lie around 70 kilometers south of Nakhon Phanom city and remain open during daylight without an entrance fee. Visitors should cover their shoulders and knees and remove shoes before entering prayer halls.
The tower shows relief carvings from Brahman mythology on its walls, which are uncommon for a Buddhist temple. Toward the peak there are a total of 110 kilograms of gold applied during reconstruction after the collapse.
