Tham Kong Lo, Natural cave system in Kounkham District, Laos.
Tham Kong Lo is an extensive cave system carved through limestone mountains with a navigable river passage that reaches heights of more than 100 meters in sections. The underground waterway extends for several kilometers and forms a natural opening through the rock formation.
The cave was first explored by seven local men who entered after noticing rice seedlings floating out from the mountain formation. This initial exploration took several days and led to the discovery of the underground water system.
The river running through the cave has long connected two villages and serves as a natural water passage for local people. Residents still use this underground route today as part of their daily travel between communities.
Access requires multiple fees at different points: entry to the park area, access to the cave, and the boat tour inside. With proper planning you can visit all sections in one day, though you should expect waiting times at the various checkpoints.
The boat journey takes you through complete darkness for roughly forty minutes, with stops to observe geological formations along the way. This sensory experience of total darkness creates a memorable element for many visitors.
